Activists conduct sweep against Malaysians on street

Dozens of activists from the Ganyang Malaysia (Crush Malaysia) Volunteers conducted a street sweep against the neighboring country’s citizens on Jl. Diponegoro, in Central Jakarta, on Tuesday.

The ID card check lasted about three hours before the police stepped in and dispersed the activists, who failed to find any Malaysian national.

The volunteers, clad in red and white accessories, stopped every pedestrian, motorcyclist and driver, asking them to show their ID cards.

One of the volunteers, Aji Kusuma, said the group initiated the sweep as they were disappointed with the government's slow response to Malaysia’s repeated claims on Indonesian cultural heritage.

“Our dignity and pride has been trampled on, but the government seems to ignore it,” secretary-general of the Volunteers to Defend Democracy (Repdem) told The Jakarta Post.

“We need a decisive government and we don't think it exists under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.”

The ID check caused the traffic around Cikini in Menteng district to halt for several hours despite the police’s efforts to channel the flow of vehicles to alternative routes.

Central Jakarta Police chief of operation Adj. Sr. Comr. Aries Syahbudin said the sweeping was considered illegal.

“They did not notify us about their rally in advance,” Aries said.

The activists threatened to conduct another sweep in the next few days.

“We will evaluate our action today before we plan the next rally. It could take place outside the Malaysian embassy,” Aji said.

Founding president Sukarno launched a Ganyang Malaysia campaign in the mid 60s to fight against the formation of a Malaysian confederation state, which was deemed as a neo-colonialist power’s move to lay siege to Indonesia. (bbs)

Tips on AH1N1 Prevention

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe).

3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. Kirin completes divestment from SMC

MANILA, Philippines--Kirin Brewery of Japan has completed its divestment of a 19.9- percent stake in San Miguel Corp. by selling it to a group led by businessman Roberto Ongpin for about P40 billion.

Some 314 million SMC B shares -- open to foreign investors -- were crossed at the Philippine Stock Exchange at a price of P63 per share on Friday, stock market sources said.

Kirin earlier made a deal to sell its stake in SMC to Q-Tech Alliance Holdings Inc.

Among the local incorporators of Q-Tech are Ongpin and Petron Corp. president Eric Recto.

Also among the investors are Mirzan Mahathir, chairman of Crescent Capital Bhd. and eldest son of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

KUALA LUMPUR: Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and his six suspended state executive council members are seeking a second opinion from a Queen’s Counsel in London on the constitutional impasse in the state.

According to a source close to the Barisan Nasional, a senior lawyer is leaving for London Monday to meet with the QC.

One of the assemblymen and other lawyers will also be part of the group, said the source.

“The team comprises old and new young lawyers, there is one who was involved in the two chief ministers case in Sabah in 1986.

“They are going to for a second opinion on the purported suspension of the Perak MB and the six assemblymen as well as the suit filed (by Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin on Feb 13) that the MB (Dr Zambry) is purportedly not the MB.”

The constitutional crisis in Perak began early this month after two PKR and one DAP assemblymen left their parties, leading to Nizar to seek Sultan Azlan Shah’s consent to dissolve the state assembly. On Feb 5, the ruler instead declared the Pakatan Rakyat government had lost its majority and appointed Barisan’s Dr Zambry as Mentri Besar.

Nizar and his team have refused to quit and the crisis is now a well truly a constitutional quagmire after State Legislative Assembly Speaker V. Sivakumar on Feb 18 suspended Dr Zambry and his executive council from the assembly for 12 and 18 months, respectively.

Asked whether the lawyers had been instructed by Barisan, the source said they were acting on behalf of Dr Zambry and the six exco members and took instructions from them as the aggrieved party.

On whether they would apply for a QC to represent them in court, the source said:

“No. In addition to seeking a second opinion, they also want an opinion on the position in other Commonwealth jurisdictions, apart from the Sabah and Sarawak cases here.”

Asked whether the legal eagles were getting a QC’s opinion because several legal experts have described the legal impasse as “uncharted constitutional territory”, despite the East Malaysian case precedents, he replied:

“They think the Federal Constitution has been stretched to extreme limits. See how the Speaker unilaterally acted in convening the Rights and Privileges Committee when the Dewan was not in session and suspending the MB and his exco members.”

“That is a clear and direct contravention of the assembly’s Standing Orders and convention as practised in Parliament.”

Asked whether the state legal adviser would represent Dr Zambry and the six in court, the source said that because they were suspended as assemblymen, the question of whether the state legal adviser could do so in that case and act for Dr Zambry in Nizar’s application for a judicial review was also a matter they were seeking a second opinion of from the QC.

Larry Flynt is asking for a bailout.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people."

“We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday.

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It's time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.

Persoalan Kuil di Sek 19 dan Tindakan Pewaris

Kerajaan BN telah meninggalkan banyak perkara yang perlu diperbetulkan oleh kerajaan PR selepas kami mengambil alih. Selain dari penyelewengan dan salah guna kuasa yang menjadi bagaikan ‘signiature’ BN, terdapat juga persoalan projek-projek terbengkalai, projek-projek di lereng bukit yang tidak patut diluluskan tetapi diluluskan, penduduk rumah setinggan, kemiskinan bandar dan ‘lain-lain’. Di antara yang ‘lain-lain’ itu adalah persoalan kuil-kuil yang bertaburan yang telah tidak diurus dengan baik apatah lagi bertanggung jawab oleh BN.

Kebanyakan dari kuil-kuil ini merupakan kuil yang telah dibina semasa tempat berkenaan merupakan estet getah pada tahun-tahun sebelum Malaya merdeka. Apabila estet itu diambil-alih untuk dijadikan kawasan perumahan, pada tahun-tahun selepas merdeka, pekerja-pekerja ladang dipindahkan tetapi kuil mereka dibiarkan di tempat asal. Ianya tidak dipindahkan bersama penduduknya. Akhirnya penduduk asal terus mengunjungi kuil tersebut sambil kawasan persekitaran dibangunkan. Kuil mereka juga terus dibangunkan mereka.

Kesudahannya adalah seperti apa yang terdapat di Seksyen 19, Shah Alam! Rumah-rumah yang didiami orang Melayu berhampiran dan berhadapan kuil. Keadaan ini lebih merumitkan apabila penduduk memberitahu bahawa semasa membeli rumah-rumah mereka, PKNS telah menjamin bahawa kuil berkenaan tidak akan lagi berada disitu apabila rumah mereka siap. Namun, di bawah BN, janji seperti biasa tinggal sebagai janji. Masalah ini telah wujud selama 20 tahun lebih dan apabila PR mengambil alih, kami terpaksa menyelesaikan masalah yang diwujudkan BN ini. BN hanya pandai menimbulkan masalah tetapi buntu untuk mencari penyelesaian.

Dasar kerajaan PR adalah mudah. Pertama, kuil-kuil yang lama ini perlu dipindahkan ke satu tempat yang lebih sesuai. Tempat perlu dikenal pasti oleh PBT dan semestinya dipersetujui oleh pengguna kuil berkenaan. PBT perlu mengambil kira segala permasalahan yang akan dihadapi oleh pengguna kuil hasil dari pemindahan tersebut. Sambil itu, pembinaan kuil baru, selain dari hasil perpindahan, juga dihentikan.

Pada Khamis 8hb Januari, sambil saya menghadiri mesyuarat berhubung penduduk Rimba Jaya yang telah dirobohkan rumah-rumah mereka oleh kerajaan BN (masalah yang diwarisi lagi!), saya mendapat maklumat dari seorang penduduk Melayu Seksyen 19 bahawa ada sekumpulan Melayu telah datang untuk menimbulkan ketegangan di kuil tersebut. Selepas mesyuarat berkenaan saya bergegas ke sana dan mendapati sekumpulan orang, kebanyakan mereka orang luar, berkumpul berhampiran kuil tersebut. Mereka ingin membina ‘gelanggang silat’ di tepi kuil dan akan mengadakan kenduri untuk merasmikan pembukaan gelanggang tersebut pada hari Sabtu 10hb ini. Untuk kenduri itu mereka akan tumbangkan 2 ekor lembu! Seterusnya mereka akan menjamu penduduk dan orang ramai di depan kuil berkenaan. Gelanggang mereka akan dibina tanpa membuat apa-apa permohonan kepada phak berkuasa kerana kata mereka, kuil tersebut juga tidak mendapat kebenaran!

Orang yang mengetuai kumpulan tersebut datangnya dari Melaka! Dia menyatakan dia ‘mewakili rakyat’ dan tindakan ini terpaksa mereka ambil melalui persatuan NGO mereka yang bernama ‘PEWARIS’ kerana kerajaan PR masih berhoneymoon. Dia berkata penduduk sudah hilang kepercayaan kepada kerajaan dan oleh itu penduduk memanggil mereka turun. Amat jelas, soal gelanggang silat dan sebagainya hanya satu helah. Sebenarnya mereka mahu provoke pihak kuil berkenaan.

Saya menyatakan 'wakil rakyat' di sini adalah saya, bukan dia (mungkin dia ingat dia masih di Melaka). Sekiranya dia ingin mewakili rakyat, dia patut turun bertanding dalam PRU yang akan datang. Saya juga memberitahunya bahawa yang ‘berhoneymoon’ selama 50 tahun adalah BN! Saya menjelaskan bahawa pihak kerajaan sedang menguruskan perkara ini dan kita harus diberi masa. Kalau BN tak dapat buat apa-apa dalam tempoh 20 tahun lebih, semenjak rumah-rumah mula didiami, takkanlah saya tidak boleh diberi tempoh setahun, kata saya lagi. Malahan, tambah saya, pada bulan 5 atau 6 tahun lepas, saya telah bertemu dengan penduduk di dewan Masjid Sek. 19 dan berbincang dengan mereka dan memohon tempoh setahun. Mereka telah bersetuju.

Orang Melaka ini terus menuduh bahawa PR mendiamkan diri bila orang India membina kuil-kuil baru di merata Shah Alam. Saya nyatakan tiada kuil baru dibina dan dia gelakkan saya. Saya beritahu dia, “tunjuk saya di mana kalau kamu bercakap benar!” Dia pun terus ke keretanya, minta saya ikut di belakang sambil dengan penuh keyakinan mengatakan, “mari, saya tunjuk awak”! Maka saya mengekorinya; hai orang Melaka ini yang menganggap dirinya lebih tahu Shah Alam dari orang Shah Alam. Akhirnya dia bawa saya ke sebuah kuil di tepi landasan keretapi di Seksyen 15. Saya beritahu dia kuil itu telah ada di situ “sebelum kamu dilahirkan ke dunia ini”. Dia diam dan terus kembali ke kuil Seksyen 19.

Tidak puas hati lagi dia mencabar saya sebaik sahaja kita sampai di Seksyen 19, “awak orang Melayu, orang Islam, kenapa awak sibuk sangat nak membela kuil ini”? Saya jawab, “kerana Islam mengajar saya supaya bertindak adil terhadap semua manusia. Mereka, walaupun bukan Islam, ada hak dan Islam menuntut kita menghormati hak mereka”. Dia diam. Seterusnya dia berkata dia tak tahu sangat soal agama ini.Saya menambah lagi, "kita marah bila Israel mengasari ummat Islam di Gaza, jangan kita pula mengikut perangai Israel".

Melihat dia mula teragak-agak saya pun menyatakan bahawa saya tahu Pewaris dan Pekida adalah NGO yang adik beradik. Penaung Pekida adalah PM maka semestinya begitu juga Pewaris. Kedua-dua NGO ini dikuasai oleh ahli UMNO. Saya tahu juga bahawa tindakan mereka ini, pada masa ini, ada hubung kait dengan PR kecil KT. Mereka ingin menimbulkan ketegangan dan masalah kaum supaya dengan itu mereka boleh menjaja keseluruh negara bahawa PR telah gagal menyelesaikan masalah ini di Selangor; dan Selangor sekarang ada masalah perkauman. Dia diam dan selepas itu dia menegur saya kerana buruk sangka, tetapi dia tidak menafikannya.

Dengan itu saya berundur. Saya memberitahu pegawai Polis dan juga pihak penguatkuasa MBSA yang berada di sana bahawa ini tugas mereka. Mereka kena menjaga keselamatan dan keamanan. Saya difahamkan walaupun gelanggang tidak dibina, namun mereka ingin teruskan kenduri mereka. Mereka kata mereka akan menjemput saya sekali. Saya menjawab, ikut undang-undang. Kalau pembinaan gelanggang dapat kelulusan MBSA, saya datang.

Kalau tidak, program Aman Palestine di stadium Melawati pada 10hb jam 10 pagi adalah tempat yang lebih afdal bagi saya untuk hadir, begitu juga dia!
